about 9 years old during his first trip to Greece to visit his grandparents where he became fascinated with wine and its role in our culture. The name “Kendros” means “center” in Greek, and the property is located right in the center of the Adelaida District AVA, nestled up on a predominantly west facing mountainside. The name “Kendros” is also special to our family roots because our last name – Boutzoukas – originated on Mount Kendros in Crete, Greece. This vineyard features large formations of Adelaide stone and steep hillsides, starting at 1,600 and reaching up to 2,200 feet in elevation. There are six blocks consisting of 4 different grape varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, and Syrah. With it’s landscape not as steep or rack as the other parts of the Adelaide, Boutz Ranch has it’s own diverse characteristics. Of the 36 planted acres, we have redeveloped over 14 of them and are in the process of switching to even more sustainable farming for the entire ranch. Boutz Ranch is also the site where we are experimenting with our Greek varietals -- Moscofilero, Assyrtiko, Agriogitiko, Xinomavro, and Vidiano! The Cretan varietal, Liatiko, will be plated in the coming months and we are really excited to see how they grow in the soils/climate here in Paso Robles.
